Case Studies

Join us in celebrating the incredible achievements of our service users. Here is a selection of case studies showcasing the people we support, on their journey towards independence.

D

Since arriving at Spectra Care in August 2020, D has received personalised 1:1 care and support for his learning disabilities, autism, epilepsy and non-verbal communication. We observed that D would become visibly distressed when he was unable to control situations, leading us to implement healthy and consistent communication by displaying photo stories of upcoming activities and tasks, as well as encouraging D to express himself with facial expressions.

Once he was comfortable in his new environment we introduced structured daily care and activities to develop positive independent living skills, which has encouraged D to clean his room, help with meal preparations and wash dishes with support staff. D has gained confidence with going to the park, regular walks and getting his favourite takeaway of chicken and chips once a week.
We are very proud of D and his amazing achievements so far which we will continue to support and develop further.

A was born with genetic schizophrenia and mental health issues, she is non-verbal and was later diagnosed with LD and autism. As A grew older, her behaviours that challenged became more difficult to manage as she struggled to attend school or travel by car, which effected her community engagement and quality of life.

Requiring further support, A arrived at Spectra Care, initially as an interim placement. However A seemed to flourish quite rapidly with staff and fellow service users, therefore her social worker insisted that Spectra Care was the best place for A to continue her development.

A has managed to settle in a way she never has before as Spectra Care does not look to change her, but allow her to flourish as an individual. Not only does A excel in performing her own independent living skills (including making her bed and helping with her washing), but she now has 100% attendance at school and frequently accesses the community via public transport! We are so incredibly pleased for her!

M

Growing up, M was diagnosed with severe behaviours that challenge, which caused physical harm. His episodes of acute mental health issues were very unpredictable, leading M to spend the majority of his teens between supported living and paediatric psychiatric facilities.

M has managed to find a home in Spectra Care with his staff ratios evolving from 5:1 to 4:1. M’s team have stressed the importance of open communication with him, and attribute this to their success. The team conduct daily check ins, proposing activities and plans that cater to M’s wants and needs, ensuring that he is both comfortable and at times challenged to progress further. This method has allowed M to develop relationships with staff, which additionally aids his desire to manage his own behaviours that challenge.

M goes on community trips and loves trains! He is often occupied by watching his favourite train route from London Bridge to South London or anything Arsenal related! At Spectra Care, we understand M’s challenges but remain confident and proud of the stability he and his staff have been able to maintain.
